Pain decared a Medical Specialty

June 5th, 2014

The Governing Body of Chronic Pain Ireland are pleased to inform you that the former Minister for Health and Children, Dr James Reilly TD, under the provisions of the Medical practitioners Act 2007 and on the recommendation of the Irish Medical Council, declared Pain Medicine a Medical Specialty.

This means, in the first instance, that the area of Pain Medicine will now be regulated. Only those physicians on the Specialist Register will be permitted to treat patients with Chronic Pain.  Those physicians will have to have reached the required qualifications and standards as prescribed by the Faculty of Pain Medicine, College of Anaesthetists Ireland.

We are seeking meetings with relevant parties to review the implications of the declaration and will keep our members updated.
