Protect Supports to People with Neurological Conditions in 2013

 

The Neurological Alliance of Ireland (NAI) is calling on the government to protect services and supports to people with disabilities in next week's budget. The umbrella group represents over 30 not for profit organisations, working with people with conditions such as epilepsy, Alzheimers disease, multiple sclerosis, acquired brain injury and Parkinsons disease. Over 700,000 people in Ireland are living with a neurological condition, many of which have a chronic disabling impact on their lives.

Formation of a EUPATI National Platform

Peter Kelly, National Secretary, Chronic Pain Ireland will Chair the National Liaison Team in Ireland which plans to drive the formation of a EUPATI National Platform. IPPOSI is supporting this effort in consultation with Mr. Kelly and his colleagues on the NLT.

"Play your part, protect neurological care in 2013"


As Ireland prepares to host European Month of the Brain in May 2013, as part of its EU presidency, we still lag far behind the rest of Europe when it comes to neurological care. A recent report by the HSE showed that over 5000 people were waiting over a year to see a neurologist and Irish people just can't get access to the kind of specialist care and rehabilitation that is routinely available in other countries.

"Have your chance to talk to the HSE about rehabilitation for people with neurological conditions"


Rehabilitation refers to the services and supports essential to help people with neurological conditions recover from and cope with the effects of their condition.


The consultant heading the HSE's national clinical programme for rehabilitation will meet with people with neurological conditions and their families on Wednesday 26th September in the Royal Marine Hotel Dun Laoghaire from 9.30-12.30.


The aim of the meeting is to hear about their experiences and their views on how services can be improved.

NAI is continuing their ongoing campaign for better access to neurorehabilitation services and have developed a questionnaire asking service users about their experiences

 


The results of this questionnaire will be used to to highlight the issue in the media to communicate to the rehabilitation medicine programme and the wider HSE on the huge needs in this area
