While all in-person events for 2020 have been postponed, Chronic Pain Ireland will instead bring you a range of video's by a variety of healthcare professionals and these will be made available for general viewing on our video library. We have also listed additional online national courses that you can register for, free of charge at the end of this page.
Throughout the months ahead, Chronic Pain Ireland will be looking at a range of topics from stakeholders including Pain Consultants, Physiotherapist, Psychologist, lecturers and researchers.

Speaker Dr Claire Hayes Consultant Clinical Psychologist who has a particular interest in the areas of coping, prevention and resilience. She is the Clinical Director of Aware and works with volunteers and staff to support people who have depression or bipolar disorder.

In this talk Dr Hayes examines this, looking at factors we do & don't have control over, increased anxiety, fears, grief we may be experiencing. Discussing Cognitive Behaviour Techniques and how it helps.
She has developed a clear and logical approach to helping people understand the basic principles of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), which has become known as‘The Coping Triangle’ (©Hayes). Talk given by Dr. Niamh Flynn, Sports and Performance Psychologist, Creator of End Migraine Fast Programme and Managing Director of Bodywatch Ltd Ireland which took place in July 2020. Dr. Flynn has presented internationally on a variety of topics and has been a guest lecturer at a number of universities and organiations. She is also the author of the book 'End Migraine Fast'.
In this 20 minute talk, Dr. Flynn outlines how our thoughts and our words can help us to decrease pain and manage it. A thought provoking talk, which outlines what is occuring in the body and mind, examines our limiting beliefs and thoughts, looks at clinical results and MRI findings, and how hypnotherapy and self-hypnosis can help. Have you ever wondered how you can harness the power music for self-management of pain? Music is known to affect us on many levels – emotionally, socially, physically, neurologically, and even spiritually. In the forty minute video music therapists, Dr Hilary Moss and Katie Fitzpatrick from the University of Limerick, share practical ideas on how music can be used for our health and well-being.
They introduce the concept of music therapy and show how it’s methods and techniques can be adapted for personal use, specifically for people living with chronic pain. Following a brief introduction, you can experience thirty minutes of music and mindfulness to try at home. All you need is a comfy, quiet space so you sit back and enjoy the guided breathing, mindfulness, and music.

Topic: An Outline of Stress Management and Relaxation Techniques. Click here
Presentation by Autogenic Training Therapist Dr Shelagh Wright, Chartered Psychologist and retired lecturer in Psycho-oncology, Dublin City University (school of nursing, psychotherapy and community health). Dr Wright outlines a number of stress management and relaxation techniques that are useful for all who live with chronic pain.
Autogenic Training (known as AT) is a powerful mind-body technique which helps the mind and body to regain self-regulation and balance between systems (homeostasis). AT must be taught by a qualified Autogenic Training Therapist
who guides the Trainee through their AT training programme.

Niall Kelly, MSc(Mngt), Alexander technique teacher explains The problem with chronic pain is it can last a long time, in this talk I will show how this approach holds very little risk of further pain or injury and why doing ‘little or nothing’ works very well for chronic pain. Watch here

Topic: The role of injustice in Adjusting to chronic pain.
Josh states "chronic pain and injustice is not talked about enough, justice is not just 'fair and unfair' there is a lot more nuance. There is strong stigma attached to chronic pain, and what people with chronic pain have to deal with in respect of other people's responses. When people are treated unfairly there are strong responses that lead to non acceptance of the outcome.
A truly insightful explanation and overview of his research studies from focus groups (study 1 and 2) and their shared experiences with healthcare experiences, waiting lists, dealing with loss (work, relationships, social life), responses to living with chronic pain (real or in your head), society lack of understanding etc.
The above lack of knowledge and stigma is not actively talked about enough, chronic pain is invisible, many doubt the validity of chronic pain and the stated experience of pain. As chronic pain can't be seen, certain aspects of society question validity, doubt the severity etc. Isolation, loss of contacts be if family, friends, work colleagues, pressure to conform, very difficult to be yourself and who you are at that particular time. Speaker Dr. Dominic Hegarty, Consultant in Pain Management & Neuromodulation, Clinical Director Pain Relief IrelandTopic: Covid and Chronic Pain Watch video here Covid has certainly impacted on so many of us however the latest emerging information is concerning. "A large proportion of the 7.5 million cases of infection with COVID-19 globally are likely to develop chronic pain" states Dr. Dominic Hegarty (Consultant in Pain Management & Neuromodulation). In his video shared with CPI for Pain Awareness Month he discusses the challenges that lie ahead, the importance of having a coordinated rehabilitation plan and the long-term impact of chronic pain will have on survivors and society. Chronic Pain Ireland thanks Dr Hegarty for his continued efforts in raising awareness of chronic pain and in particular his support of our work. Currently 1 in 5 develop chronic pain over their lifetime. The Irish health care system will now potentially need to deal with a significant number of new individuals attending Pain Clinics. Over the last few months we've told you about our joint partnership with Dr Vasilis Vasiliou, PhD Clinical Psychologist, UCC School of Applied Psychology and our aim is to develop and establish an against-stigma self-care programme, delivered to local communities. So in January 2021 we move to Phase II, our aims are develop a group of volunteers with chronic pain to co-develop the ASpida self-care protocol (public and patient involvement (PPI)).

An online self-management service by NUIG Centre of Pain Research.shares evidence based information about chronic pain and self-management strategies that can help. Divided into three main sections, the entire course will take about 45 minutes and will list further reading and online resources. HSE The Living Well with Chronic Illness programme is a free, evidence based, group, self-management programme for adults with long-term health conditions. Originally developed at the School of Medicine, Stanford University, USA, this Chronic Disease Self-Management Programme has been available in Ireland since 2005 under various names. The Living Well programme supports participants to develop the skills which will help them to self-manage and to live well with their long-term health condition(s). The decision to cancel in-person events is regrettable and while the risk of contracting COVID-19 remains low throughout Ireland, CPI's decision was made, given that many of our members have low immune systems and the health and safety of our members and speakers is our utmost priority
